Q & A with Erin LaVoie

Posted October 2, 2019 By Erin LaVoie

What is your role at ILLUME?
I am ILLUME’s Proposal and Production Manager which means I lead business development efforts like proposals and oversee our graphic design team. It’s a mix of BD and marketing responsibilities that keeps me hopping!

Where are you from and where do you live now?
I am from Monroe, Wisconsin and landed one town over in New Glarus, Wisconsin after about 10 years of moving around. It’s great to be back in the Madison area where I grew up!

Who or what inspires you in your work?
I am inspired by the passion, smarts, and work ethic of the ILLUME team. I’m always excited to help us win new work that aligns with our company values and interests.

Do you have any pets?
Yes, I have a cat named Edison, or Ed Cat—as my almost two-year-old calls him—and a handful of fish.

What are your favorite hobbies?
I love to cook and bake, hike, camp, and tend my ridiculously large vegetable garden.

What’s your favorite quote or motto?
“If something is worth doing, it’s worth doing well.” Apparently, this expression can be traced back to some long dead Earl, but I heard it from my Papa (grandpa on my mother’s side) and have carried it with me.

What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?
First is the worst in this case! My first job was cleaning hotel rooms and it was pretty miserable.

What is the best concert you ever attended?
I’ve been to some great concerts in the past, but I’m hoping seeing Lizzo in October is the best yet!

What is your superpower?
I am ILLUME’s personal grammar police with an innate sense of readability and proper sentence structure. I can find passive voice from 100 yards away and review for clarity faster than a speeding bullet. Well, maybe not, but I’d say editing is my superpower.

If you could have chosen another career path, what would you be doing?
I went to school to be an environmental lawyer and ended up in consulting. I suppose I could have followed my path to a more traditional legal career, but the hours aren’t as good. 😊
