Position: Consultant/Sr. Consultant – Building Science
Status: Full-time, 40 hours per week

- Remote and Madison-based candidates will be considered and will be required to travel to hub offices occasionally.
Job Summary
If you have a background in energy efficiency impact evaluation, mechanical or building systems engineering, and/or building science and are interested in joining a passionate and collaborative team working for a clean energy future, our Building Science Consultant position might be the role for you.
ILLUME is seeking an individual with experience in the energy industry with demonstrated engineering, analysis, energy auditing, and/or impact evaluation skills. Candidates should have a strong foundation of knowledge of building science and energy-use equipment in at least one building sector—residential, commercial, and/or industrial. The ideal candidate will be excited by the challenges of helping to design and conduct research studies and program evaluations, with a strong focus on impact evaluation and projects designed to support electrification strategy and development. This individual may also support designing evaluation plans and approaches; analyzing data; supporting qualitative research, such as conducting technical interviews with equipment contractors, building professionals, and utility staff; and reporting on findings with clarity and coherence.
ILLUME is a fast-paced consulting environment. In this role, it will be important to be able to juggle multiple priorities to help our project teams deliver exceptional work to our clients.
For our current opening, we are looking for candidates with demonstrated expertise in applied research, program impact evaluation, and/or applied engineering within the energy industry. Candidates with advanced experience will be considered for a senior-level position.
The Building Science Consultant Will:
- Support projects that help clients navigate a clean energy future. Bring your building science knowledge and engineering mindset to a range of projects that help clients understand their path and measure their progress toward a clean energy future.
- Demonstrate strong building science knowledge, engineering and research skills. Help lead technical aspects of impact evaluations, research studies, and other projects by identifying the most appropriate approaches and methodologies and completing or overseeing work in those areas. Projects will often involve estimating real-world energy savings, demand reduction, and carbon reduction for emerging and existing technologies in residential, commercial, and/or industrial sectors.
- Bring curiosity, critical thinking, and a love of problem-solving to work every day. Turn data and analysis into insight, analyzing why things happened and what our clients can learn from the research. Support describing building science and engineering concepts in writing and presentation formats to a wide audience and ultimately use data to inform critical client decisions.
- Be successful working across multiple projects where every day brings something new. Contribute to the success of multiple projects; every day is different, and the ideal candidate will love the variety and fast-paced nature of research in a consulting environment and have proven ability to successfully juggle the needs of multiple projects.
- Harness a growth mindset to expand knowledge and expertise in energy efficiency and clean energy. Keep up with new developments in the industry and bring new ideas to the ILLUME team. Support project teams with market research and evaluation that might be outside their typical experiences.
- Proactively communicate with project leadership and teams. Keep project managers and team members updated on progress, setbacks, and any barriers to meeting project quality, timeline, or budget needs.

Required Education
Bachelor’s degree or higher in relevant area of study such as engineering, building science, or related field.
Required Qualifications
- At least 2 years of professional experience in energy efficiency impact evaluation, energy engineering, mechanical/building systems engineering, or building science.
- Proficiency in engineering algorithms and/or modeling to estimate energy consumption associated with various building system end uses, such building shell, lighting, and HVAC systems,
- Superior verbal and written communication skills, demonstrating clarity and conciseness and ability to explain complex topics to a non-technical audience.
- Curiosity and an ability to learn quickly and on-the-job; a love of researching new things and solving problems.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively in the face of multiple and shifting priorities, with the ability to switch between complex analytical thinking and attending to routine tasks without compromising quality or losing one’s focus.
- Demonstrated independent decision-making experience with solid judgment.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
The salary for this position will depend on the education, professional experience, industry experience, and subject matter expertise of the applicant. The Consultant/Senior Consultant position salary band is $70,000 to $120,000.

Working Conditions
ILLUME employees work in a hybrid work environment and we continuously monitor public health guidelines to make any updates necessary to ensure the health and safety of all employees. This position requires sitting (or standing) for long periods of time at a computer; and communicating by telephone and email. The dress code at ILLUME is business casual (“pulled together”). This position requires some travel.
Background Screening and Drug Testing
Many clients of ILLUME Advising require individuals who will be working with confidential information, visiting client customer homes or businesses, or meet another contractually required circumstance to pass a background screen and/or drug test. In the event you are assigned to work on a contract with client ordered screening requirements you will be required to complete the client’s required screening before working on the project with appropriate notice. The results of background screening and drug testing are used solely to meet client criteria for working on specific projects.
