JOB TITLE: Consultant Data Scientist
STATUS: Exempt, 40 hours per week
LOCATION: Madison, WI; Tucson, AZ; San Diego, CA; Washington, DC
*Remote candidates will be considered and will be required to travel to hub offices occasionally.
Job Summary
We are looking for a senior data scientist for a role that will blend hands-on data wrangling and modeling with team building, improving internal systems, and identifying opportunities and direction for our data science work. If you love data and want to turn data into actionable insights for our energy systems, this might be the role for you.
The Senior Data Scientist Will:
Be a data and modeling translator: The Senior Data Scientist will turn data into insight, analyzing why things happened and predicting what could happen in alternative scenarios. You’ll describe complex data and modeling concepts in writing and presentation formats to a wide audience and ultimately use data to inform critical client decisions.
Build a lasting infrastructure: The Senior Data Scientist will lead our team in making our code more efficient, solidifying code modules, implementing version control, and using consistent approaches to coding.
Coach and train our team: We have a growing team of beginning to intermediate data scientists. The Senior Data Scientist will help our team level-up their coding and analysis skills.
Immerse themselves in data problems: Sometimes the Senior Data Scientist will dive in and do the work, especially for complex new projects and methodologies.
Learn and learn some more: If you are not familiar with the energy industry, you will learn about the critical questions, methods, and approaches that are commonly used. But we do not want to stop there. Executive leadership will be looking to you to extend your and our knowledge of new approaches to bring to our thorniest problems.
Required Education
Bachelor’s degree or higher in relevant area of study such as statistics, mathematics, engineering, building science, or economics.
Required Qualifications
- At least three years of professional experience in data science.
- Proficiency in data science and statistical modeling.
- Expertise with R, Python, SQL, or other programming languages to merge, clean, and model large and complex data sets.
- Experience with project management to deliver exceptional on time and budget.
- Experience leading teams, training, and coaching beginning data scientists.
- Superior verbal and written communication skills, demonstrating clarity and conciseness and ability to explain complex data topics to a non-technical audience.
- Curiosity and an ability to learn quickly and on-the-job; a love of researching new things, solving problems, finding bugs.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively in the face of multiple and shifting priorities, with the ability to switch between complex analytical thinking and attending to routine tasks without compromising quality or losing one’s focus.
- Demonstrated independent decision-making experience with solid judgment.

Working Conditions
ILLUME employees work in a hybrid work environment and we continuously monitor public health guidelines to make any updates necessary to ensure the health and safety of all employees. This position requires sitting (or standing) for long periods of time at a computer; and communicating by telephone and email. The dress code at ILLUME is business casual (“pulled together”). This position requires some travel.
Background Screening and Drug Testing
Many clients of ILLUME Advising require individuals who will be working with confidential information, visiting client customer homes or businesses, or meet another contractually required circumstance to pass a background screen and/or drug test. In the event you are assigned to work on a contract with client ordered screening requirements you will be required to complete the client’s required screening before working on the project with appropriate notice. The results of background screening and drug testing are used solely to meet client criteria for working on specific projects.
