Marilla Yaggie is a data scientist and engineer with six years of experience in the energy industry. Marilla’s passion is working collaboratively with her utility clients to find solutions through data analytics to address their challenges, goals, and needs. She specializes in quantitative methods for program evaluation, using techniques to clean, investigate, analyze, and present results from large datasets and evaluations in insightful ways. Marilla leads evaluations for residential demand response and load shifting programs that leverage a variety of enabling technologies including smart thermostats, connected water heaters, and battery storage systems. Through her work in this space, she has gained expertise in establishing experimental designs for evaluation, and in supporting the pilot program implementation process by using data-driven processes to identify issues in real-time. Outside of work, Marilla spends her time rock climbing in the Arizona and Utah deserts.

Water Heater Demand Response: Comparing Full Replacement and After-Market Controllers

This presentation, presented at the 2022 IEPEC conference, discusses two approaches to water heater demand response (DR); full unit replacement and after-market controllers. We present results from a pilot sponsored by a southeastern utility that tested installing brand-new Wi-Fi-enabled water heaters and conducted both winter and summer events.
